Wood Shaving Equipment and MethodolgyThere are several methods of obtaining wood shavings in both large and small quantities using various types of bulk wood shaving equipment. The two main methods of processing are shown below:1. Bulk timber is purchase solely to convert into wood shavings. Such as a mill using dedicated wood shaving equipment. 2. Wood shavings are collected as a by product when timber is planed to size in the mill. In (1) above, bulk timber is processed in a dedicated shaving mill and converted 100% into wood shavings. However, if the timber is still green and contains a great deal of moisture, up to 45% in some instances, the wood shavings must be dried before being collected and bagged. In this situation the wood shavings are fed through a rotary dryer. This process removes most of the moisture and the wood shavings can now be filtered and any dust extracted. In some bulk wood shaving mills the waste from the filter process is passed to the heater as fuel. Once the wood shavings are dry and clean they are compressed and bagged, awaiting delivery. In (2) above, wood shavings are collected from the planing process in the mill. If the mill processes mainly kiln or air dried timber, an additional drying process is not required as the timber is already dry. The wood shavings can simply be cleaned and filtered before being compressed and bagged. Unlike method 1, this process is a by product and is unlikely to produce similar volumes as a mill using dedicated wood shaving equipment.
